Drought Emergency Update – Marka, Afgoye & Wanlaweyn, Southwest State

The drought situation in Lower Shabelle continues to worsen, and communities in Marka, Afgoye, and Wanlaweyn are now facing severe and immediate humanitarian needs.

HAMDI field teams working on the ground are reporting:

⚠️ Critical water shortages affecting entire villages

⚠️ Livestock deaths, leaving families without food or income

⚠️ Children at high risk of malnutrition as milk production drops

⚠️ Displaced households seeking urgent assistance

⚠️ Increased protection risks, especially for women, elderly people, and persons with disabilities

These communities cannot wait. The situation requires rapid and coordinated intervention before conditions deteriorate further.

HAMDI remains committed to staying close to affected families, assessing needs, and advocating for urgent support. We call on partners, donors, and humanitarian actors to scale up life-saving assistance in Marka, Afgoye, and Wanlaweyn.
